Reasons to Learn German

When it comes to learning a new language, there are always numerous benefits that come with it. The same applies to learning German.

Below are the 7 perfect reasons to learn German.

#1: German and English Share the Same Linguistic Root

German and English are both ‘West Germanic languages’ and share similar language roots. Even though French and Latin both have a big influence on the formation of English, German is still one of the biggest contributors to the formation of English.

This proximity between both languages means that English speakers have a very helpful head start when picking up German to learn. In fact, 26% of vocabulary in English has shared roots with German. Several languages vie the “easiest language for English speakers to learn” title, and while French and Spanish are famous choices, German is certainly worth considering.

#2: Discover a New Version of Yourself

When it comes to learning languages, there is always a high potential for your personal readjustments. Many language learners attest to having slightly distinct personalities in different languages. Distinct accents, gestures, and intonations are inextricably linked to a language. Accommodating this requires one to adjust the way he or she naturally behaves in social settings.

For the German language, this means being direct (which is undeniably one of the major reasons to learn German at first).  This may sound too much at first, but don’t worry! This gradual, organic change comes as you become more proficient at expressing yourself in new ways and different aspects of your personality shine through using German.

#3: Make More Money

Now that we have got you interested in learning German, one of the best reasons to learn German is to make more money. According to statistics from the Economist, German learners will have accumulated bonus earnings worth 125,000 euros. That amount just by learning German? Yes!

Germany is one of the world economic powerhouses and is the largest European trading partner with the United States and many other nations around the world.

Think about every luxury car brand you know of – the majority of them were designed and manufactured in Germany.

#4: University in German is Free

Wait… you just talked about more money and now free education? Oh, yes! The majority of what you wish for is the perks of learning this amazing language, German.

German institutions are ranked as one of the top universities in the world. Tuition fees in similar high standard schools in the United States cost upwards of $20,000 a year, but it’s almost free in Germany. Most state schools in Germany are free, but some private institutions charge a few hundred dollars per semester, which is quite affordable than what most people are paying.

A minor downside to this is the higher taxes in Germany than in many other nations, but it may not matter if you can learn German and go for the many available courses offered in German which are completely free.

#5: More Career Opportunities

Given the attractiveness of the language, German, companies from around the world are seeking out German speakers. In fact, just about any major international corporation will have some affiliation with Germany in one way or the other.

And most importantly, German powerhouses like BMW, Volkswagen, Adidas, and Lufthansa are all established companies around the world. Want to stand out amongst the tens of thousands of applicants you’ll be competing with to land a career in any of those big names? Just learn German.

#6: It is an Important Language in Academia

With many award-winning scientists from Germany, it is no surprise that Germany is very important in the academic community. In fact, German is ranked the second most commonly used scientific language.

In addition, the German book market is the third-largest in the world, after the English and Chinese publishing industries. With limited copies translated into other languages, only a knowledge of German will give you access to get the best from this plethora of worthy books.

#7: It Has a Big Online Presence

You don’t actually need to meet the over 100 million German speakers in the real world before you can express yourself with the language. You can do so from the comfort of your home. German websites make up a very large part of the internet. In fact, in terms of domain endings affiliated with a country, Germany’s .de is the most popular top-level domain. Are you surprised? I was too.

Your knowledge and understanding of German give you access to additional 15 million websites registered with .de and German sites ending with .com, .org, .net, and .info are not included in the counting. Of courses, this stat shows that Germany’s .de takes second place to .com which is above everything else.
